To continue our science learning this half term, we’re going to think about how we can group fruit and vegetables. How many vegetables can you name? Where do fruit and vegetables come from?

We would like you to investigate the difference between fruit and vegetables. You must choose a selection of fruit and veg to divide into halves and see if you can spot a difference between the fruit and the veg (we would like children to realise that fruit have seeds inside and vegetables do not)

Explain that the reason a plant produces fruit is to spread its seeds so that it can reproduce. The reason a plant produces vegetables depends on the plant e.g. a lettuce is leaves for photosynthesis, potatoes are a way for a potato plant to store food and rhubarb and celery are the stems of plants. Click on the link below to see how fruit and veg grow on allotments. There is also a game underneath that children might like to play.

Once you’ve found the secret as to why they’re different…can you write it down on a piece of paper to show a friend? Are there another differences or similarities between fruit and veg? Maybe you’d like to do some printing with the left overs or make some nice soup! We’d love to hear them! Please show us photos of your fruit and veg instigation.
